This journey follows one of the world’s great overland routes tracing the Silk Road from Istanbul to the South China Sea by rail and road.
Beginning in the city that bridges Europe and Asia, the route moves east through Turkey and into the Caucasus, where mountain landscapes and historic cities set the tone. A flight across the Caspian Sea opens the journey to Central Asia. In western Kazakhstan, time spent on the Mangyshlak Peninsula reveals a more remote dimension of the Silk Road, a striking lanscape of desert formations and vast, sparsely populated terrain that contrasts with the cities along the route. Continuing east, time is spent in Uzbekistan's great Silk Road cities before the journey crosses into China. Here, desert landscapes and historic outposts give way to the modern energy of Hong Kong, where the journey concludes.
